Shoppers and visitors to downtown Brampton may want to plan their parking ahead of time as the City Hall garage will be closed this weekend.

The Brampton City Hall parking garage has seen rolling closures recently due to work at City Hall to install a new emergency generator, and more work this weekend means there will be one less parking option downtown.

The garage will be closed and electricity will be disconnected from around 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, but the city says the shutdown isn’t expected to cause any computer or phone system disruptions.

All essential and critical city services including Brampton Fire & Emergency Services, Traffic Services, By-Law Enforcement, Road Operations and Security Services will operate as usual, the city says.

City staff and members of the public won’t be able to access City Hall during the construction, but the city has made free parking available downtown at the West Tower parking garage, Nelson Square parking garage, John Street parking garage and the Market Square parking garage.

The City Hall parking garage is expected to reopen on Monday.

Downtown construction has been ongoing with part of Main Street dropped down to one lane at Brampton’s Four Corners in both directions until May 31 for watermain construction and road paving work. The city made support funding of $4,000 available to downtown businesses struggling through the closures through its Downtown Construction Mitigation Grant pilot project.
