Getting into a collision is one of the most stressful things that can happen to drivers in Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Halton Hills.

Halton police are reminding motorists they don’t have to make a bad decision when it comes to choosing a tow truck.

The Halton Regional Police Service is running its third annual Tow Education and Enforcement campaign to make sure people know their rights.

According to police, drivers shouldn’t just ‘give’ their vehicle to just anyone and they have the right to refuse the first tow on the scene.

Select tow companies have been pre-approved by Halton police and those companies abide by a specific fee schedule.

Drivers are entitled to a receipt for tow services provided and police caution to never sign a contract for towing your vehicle.

“Getting in an accident is stressful,” said a police spokesperson. “Your tow shouldn’t be.”

The awareness campaign, dubbed Towbruary, will run for the entire month.
