Very few weeks go by when a dog isn’t putting the bite on a Burlington resident.

City of Burlington Animal Services reports there were 45 cases of dog bites on humans that were investigated in 2022.

That number is up slightly from the previous year when a recorded high of 47 reported bites took place.

“Domestic animal bites alone account for almost one incident per week over the past 2 years 2021/2022,” according to information released by the City.

The number of incidents has been chalked up to an increase in aggressive dogs in CIty-owned parks and open spaces, according to Animal Services.

A source from the City said the number is likely higher but many bites go unreported.

Here is a breakdown of reported dog bites from the past several years:

  • 2018 – 41
  • 2019 – 41
  • 2020 – 31
  • 2021 – 47
  • 2022 – 45

This year, there have been six reported cases that are under investigation.
