Dog abuse investigation leads to charges for Ontario man, police say

An Ontario man has been charged after allegedly abusing a dog and assaulting an officer, the OPP says.

The incident happened on Tuesday around 4 p.m. members of the Prince Edward County OPP were called to assist with an Animal Welfare Services warrant at a residence in Picton, approximately 85 kilometres southwest of Kingston.

Police say there were ongoing concerns regarding the treatment of a dog at the residence, including reports of physical abuse and failure to comply with previous orders.

Officers attended the residence and said a suspect assaulted a police officer and resisted arrest. Officers took the individual into custody after a brief struggle, and the dog was located inside the home.

The OPP says Jordan Fenemore, 32, of Picton, has been charged with two counts of assault a peace officer, resist peace officer, obstruct peace officer, and causing unnecessary pain, suffering or injury to an animal.

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Picton.

The incident has the OPP reminding the public that interfering with police or lawful investigations is a criminal offence.

“Animal cruelty is a serious offence that can result in significant criminal charges, court-imposed penalties, and prohibitions on owning animals,” the police say. “The OPP, in partnership with Animal Welfare Services, will continue to investigate and hold individuals accountable to ensure the safety and well-being of animals.”
