Staff at Mississauga’s two hospitals who aren’t fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by next Wednesday (Oct. 20) will be subject to “progressive discipline” that could include losing their jobs.

Trillium Health Partners (THP), which oversees Mississauga Hospital, Credit Valley Hospital and Queensway Health Centre (Etobicoke), said in a statement this afternoon that as of Oct. 20, a deadline set six weeks ago, “all individuals will be expected to be fully vaccinated to work or provide care at THP. This excludes those with an approved medical exemption or accommodation.”

While THP says its goal is 100 per cent compliance, “we will work through any cases of non-compliance on a case-by-case basis. Individuals who do not comply with THP’s COVID-19 Immunization Policy will be subject to progressive discipline up to and including termination of employment.”

The healthcare organization says it’s providing various supports to staff, including one-on-one information sessions and conversations, access to a spiritual care leader and town halls in efforts to encourage as much compliance as possible.

“As healthcare providers, it is our responsibility to do everything we can to protect those in our community and in our care. We have served one of the hardest-hit communities during the pandemic and know the vaccine is the best tool to protect patients and staff from the spread of the virus,” the THP statement said.

The THP policy took effect Sept. 7 and says vaccinations will be mandatory for all staff, professional staff (doctors and nurses), volunteers and others. The mandate excludes those with an approved medical exemption or accommodation.

Last week, Windsor Regional Hospital fired 57 employees and suspended six “professional staff” who failed to get vaccinated by that facility’s Oct. 7 deadline.

Hospital officials there said 4,155 employees and professional staff, or 98.5 per cent of staff, did comply with the COVID-19 vaccine policy.
