Emergency crews have stopped traffic on Highway 427 after a diesel tanker rollover in Mississauga on Tuesday (Feb. 22).

Police say the truck rolled over on the northbound Highway 427 at Highway 401 and is actively leaking diesel onto the highway.

All northbound lanes of Highway 427 were closed as crews tried to mop up the spill using sponges and absorbent material, but OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the truck is loaded with “tens of thousands of litres of diesel fuel” and there is no way to contain the leak.

The tanker had rolled onto its side and Schmidt said the tanker can’t be unloaded in that position. Another truck may be called in to pump the fuel out of the tipped over tanker.

Police say the driver did not suffer any serious injuries in the crash.

Traffic on the 427 has been backed up as a result of the crash and drivers are advised to find alternate routes if possible.
