Mayor Carolyn Parrish has appointed another deputy mayor to assist with the vision and growth of the City Centre.

Ward 4 Councillor John Kovac will fill the position as the city looks to increase housing density and expand the Living Arts Centre. The city also wants to build a sports stadium, hotel and conference centre in the downtown core.

John Kovac will serve as a deputy mayor in Mississauga.

“Mississauga is growing and our city needs to evolve to meet our current and future needs,” said Parrish in announcing the appointment. “Our council has ambitious plans for our City Centre, and no one knows this ward better than Councillor Kovac. He brings unique and necessary insights to all of our discussions about this area. I’m so pleased that he’s agreed to take on this role and I know that he will be a great champion to advance the important work happening in our downtown.”

Kovac was first elected as in 2015 and is now in his third term. He was the past chair of the city’s Arts, Culture & Heritage Ad-Hoc Committee and vice-chair of the city’s Public Vehicle Advisory Committee. He is currently the vice-chair of General Committee and a member of several City boards and committees including Planning & Development Committee, Budget Committee, Transit Advisory Committee, Road Safety Committee, Mississauga School Traffic Safety Action Committee, and the Mississauga Library Board.

The deputy mayor role was introduced in June 2024, at which time Ward 8 Councillor Matt Mahoney was appointed to the role. The deputy mayor supports the mayor and can fill in for the mayor at official events.
