The city is promising Brampton and Caledon residents a “seamless transition” when new garbage and waste collection starts after being delayed for over a year and a half.
Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon were all originally scheduled to take over waste collection from the Region of Peel in January, but was pushed back to 2027.
The takeover is part of a “downloading” of services, including roads and wastewater, away from regional control, and was handed down by the province following a scrapped plan to break the region into stand-alone municipalities.
Brampton now says it will be taking over the garbage, organics and yard waste collection services across the city and in Caledon on the town’s behalf starting in October 2027.
Recycling collection will continue to be managed by Circular Materials with no changes to recycling services for residents.
Households will receive advance notice of any service updates closer to the switch, including changes to collection schedules, waste guidelines or program details.

“The City of Brampton will continue working closely with the Region of Peel, the City of Mississauga and the Town of Caledon through the implementation plan for a smooth and seamless transition for residents while minimizing potential service disruptions,” the city said in a release on Thursday.
Waste management was previously under municipal jurisdiction prior to the ’90s, and the city says the transition “ is expected to improve service efficiency, streamline decision-making and provide municipalities with greater flexibility to deliver responsive services that reflect local priorities and growth.”
The city has also said the new waste management service could come at a lower cost than the regional service, although the exact details have not been disclosed.
The delay from January 2026 to October 2027 came following after a report to Mississauga City Council last year, which said the a 2027 start date “aligns with the start of the new waste collection contracts being awarded by the local municipalities and provides for additional time to properly transition all elements of the service.”
