After a 57-year-old St. Catharines man died in the hospital yesterday (May 7), the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating the circumstances around his arrest.

The SIU says on May 3, 2023, Niagara Police officers came to his house in the Pelham Rd. and Powerview Ave., responding to calls of a domestic incident.

During the course of the investigation, officers asked a man to leave the home. However, police say when the man began causing a disturbance in the front yard, officers tried to arrest him.

There was a struggle ensued before the man was handcuffed. However, shortly after, he went unconscious. Officers performed first aid on the man until paramedics arrived and he quickly shuttled him to hospital.

Yesterday, he died in the hospital.

The SIU have assigned three investigators and one forensic investigator to the case.
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online HERE.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
