Deal could see Burlington retirement home built and plaza saved
A four-storey retirement home conditionally approved for a Burlington neighbourhood will maintain some of the characteristics of the commercial plaza that it will replace.
The building, slated for 1600 Kerns Rd. in the Tyandaga community, will involve the elimination of the existing shopping area but will be replaced by new commercial space on the ground floor level of the new building.
A deal worked out between the City of Burlington and the developer has led to the approval process although several other technical issues have to be worked out before the project proceeds.
City officials believe the rezoning of the area should satisfy residents who were concerned about the loss of local shopping at the plaza, while at the same time providing some much-needed housing in the area.
Other changes that were made to the development plan include an increase in the size of the landscape buffer that separates the building from neighbouring properties as well as increasing the front yard setback.
The building will have 115 apartment units.
Issues that are still outstanding and could still hold up the project concern setbacks from the creek and erosion control.
