If you want to start sending your child to in-person classes or transition them to online learning, you only have a few days to make a decision.

The Peel District School Board (PDSB) recently reminded families that the deadline to switch learning models is looming.

The board says families must decide which learning model best suits them by 3:00 pm on Jan. 11.

“As we prepare for Term 2 (elementary students) and Quadmester 3 (secondary) beginning Feb. 10, families will have the opportunity to request a change in their child’s learning model one final time this school year,” the PDSB wrote in a letter to parents.

Beginning Jan. 4, families can request a switch in learning models from online to in-person learning, or vice-versa, by emailing their child’s in-person school.

As of now, students in kindergarten through to Grade 8 will learn remotely from now until Jan. 8 and return to in-person learning on Jan. 11. Secondary school students will learn remotely until Jan. 25.

The extended holiday break was implemented amid rising cases of COVID-19. As of Dec. 26, all of Ontario is in lockdown, with Southern Ontario slated to stay shuttered for at least four weeks.

“Given that schools will be closed to most students from Jan. 4 to 8, please do not phone in your requests,” the board said.

Parents who wish to contact their child’s school can view a list of all school email addresses and email the school with the student’s full name, student number and learning model choice. Parents who do not wish to make any changes are not required to contact their child’s school.

Students’ first day in their new learning model will be Feb. 10, 2021.

“Leading up to these dates, students should continue to attend their classes as usual. We will use this time to plan for your child’s smooth transition into their new learning model, ensure health and safety measures are in place, and make any necessary adjustments to staffing,” the board said.

After the deadline has passed, students will remain in their chosen learning model until the end of the 2020-21 school year.

The board says there will not be another opportunity to switch learning models.
