After yanking 30 dead Oak trees from Paradise Grove trail-park in Niagara-on-the-Lake during the past months, new trees are about to get new roots – a lot of them.

Niagara Park is now in the process of planting over 200 new trees to replace the 30 chopped down.

However, since Paradise Grove, which runs alongside Niagara Parkway, is one of the few habitats of the Black Oak Savannah in the province, all that wood that faced the ax is being repurposed for uses such as public park benches.

The 30 trees were uprooted because due to age, they posed safety risks to residents who regularly use the park. The 200 that replace them will be a variety of native tree species, ranging in size, including oak, maple and sassafras, to ensure a diversity of tree species in the area.

Niagara Parks says, “A diverse forest canopy is resilient to future threats such as invasive species and a changing climate. Each year, Niagara Parks has a goal of planting 5,000 trees to achieve a 35 per cent canopy cover by 2028.”

There will be minor traffic disruptions in the area from now to October 28, between 8 am and 2:30 pm. This includes monitored intermittent pauses to vehicular traffic along the Niagara Parkway along with the closure of Ricardo Street in Niagara-on-the-Lake, between Melville Street and the Niagara Parkway.
