Data breach of Crime Stoppers confirmed by Ontario police agency

Police say there’s been a “cybersecurity compromise” of the Crime Stoppers tip software in Hamilton.

The Hamilton Police Service says the breach was of Navigate360 – a tip management software provider under contract with the Canadian Crime Stoppers Association.

“Hamilton Police have received information from Crime Stoppers of Hamilton indicating that a breach of its information has occurred,” police said in a release on Wednesday.

Investigators haven’t disclosed when the breach took place.

Police say Crime Stoppers of Hamilton has requested a detailed report from Navigate360 “to determine the extent of the breach.” Crime Stoppers has also said Navigate360 has assured them the system “is secure and that additional security measures have been implemented,” according to police.

The Crime Stoppers software operates independently and outside of the Hamilton Police Service’s internal systems, police say.
