Residents should be on the look out for a fairly new text message scam that’s believed to be targeting some residents in Ontario, including Mississauga and Brampton.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) has received reports of a scam that claims to be from the Ministry of Health and will say your third COVID-19 vaccine dose has been scheduled.

The message then asks you to click a malicious link.

“After clicking on the link, you are asked to download software that contains malware,” warns the CAFC.

Malware on your device can potentially put your data at risk, including personal information, banking details and online account details.

At this time, third doses of the COVID-19 vaccine are only being offered to specific high-risk groups to help provide sufficient protection based on a suboptimal or waning immune response to vaccines and increased risk of COVID-19 infection.

More tips on how to recognize and avoid scams are available via the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
