Dangerous conditions possible near streams, rivers in Mississauga and Brampton

Conditions that could cause local flooding in Mississauga, Brampton and other areas near the Credit River on Tuesday and Wednesday have prompted a notice from conservation officials urging people to stay away from streams, rivers and other watercourses for the next two days.

Credit Valley Conservation, the organization that protects natural areas and watercourses in Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon and several other communities, issued a flood outlook statement on Tuesday advising “thunderstorms are expected through early evening” and that “some communities within the watershed (particularly in the south) may experience torrential downpours with more than 50 mm of rainfall.”

The statement, which remains in effect through Wednesday, also noted that “higher water levels will result in local streams and rivers becoming dangerous, especially in the vicinity of culverts, bridges and dams. Furthermore, flooding may occur in low-lying areas. Keep children and pets away from all watercourses.”

CVC officials noted the potential exists for severe thunderstorms in Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon and other areas of the watershed.

“Although stream elevations throughout the watershed are currently below bankfull, water levels are already elevated due to this morning’s precipitation. The incoming rainfall may result in further elevated water levels,” the statement concluded.

The conservation authority added it will closely monitor weather and water levels and will issue any additional statements as needed.

A flood outlook statement puts communities on early notice “of the potential for flooding” based on weather forecasts of heavy rain, high winds or other conditions that could lead to high runoff, shoreline flooding or erosion, conservation authority officials said.

Such statements are sent by CVC to municipalities, police and other emergency services, school boards and the media, among others.
