Monday saw a 20 per cent increase in positive COVID-19 cases in Peel District School Board students and staff.

The second largest board in the country is reporting 85 COVID-19 cases, up from the 71 reported yesterday.

In addition, there are 75 closed classrooms, up from 64, spread across 55 of the board’s 296 elementary and secondary schools.

Although new cases are being reported, the overall total may go down because once the case is cleared, the school is removed from the list. So schools reporting cases on the first day or two of classes have now had them resolved.

When a classroom is closed, all the students from that class are sent home and must attend school virtually for a 10-day quarantine period.

The Peel board is choosing to report zero classrooms closed in any of its secondary schools. According to the board, once any student from an effected class returns to school, the entire class is considered “not closed”. Because most secondary students are vaccinated, their quarantine period can be much shorter. Therefore, it’s extremely unlikely Peel will report secondary school classrooms closed, regardless of how many students are not in school
