Crash closes multiple lanes on highway in Toronto

Multiple lanes are closed on a busy highway that runs through Toronto.

Today (July 27), the OPP announced that three left lanes are closed on the southbound side of the 400 at Finch Avenue in Toronto’s North York neighbourhood.

On X, police said the lanes are closed following a serious accident involving a tractor-trailer. Police announced the crash shortly after 10:30 a.m.

Media reports indicate that the truck rolled over during the collision.

There are no reports of injuries (or the severity of any injuries) at the time.

Significant delays are expected.

The cause of the collision has not yet been reported.

The news comes after another truck was involved in a traffic incident earlier this week. On Friday, July 24, a transport truck became stuck in a hairpin curve, closing a road in Caledon. The OPP said during that incident, the truck and trailer became wedged into the guide rail, causing a lengthy road closure for its removal.

Incidents involving trucks have risen in recent years. A report from Dickson Wynperle Associates Law said that over 9,000 collisions involving trucks were reported by the OPP in 2022, a 10-year high. The law firm’s website said the crashes in that year resulted in over 70 deaths and thousands of serious injuries.

The crashes, the law firm said, were mostly rear-end collisions.

Earlier this month, the OPP said officers conducted multiple inspections of commercial motor vehicles in Northumberland County and placed three vehicles out of service and issued 62 provincial offence notices.

In a news release, police said officers issued notices for operating vehicles with major defects, using defective braking systems, failing to conduct daily inspections, failing to log and report vehicle defects, and more.
