COVID cases from Oshawa to Clarington on the rise again

A few COVID-19 signs are creeping ominously higher into the danger zone, though it’s premature to be calling for a new wave of the virus just yet.
New cases rose sharply last week (August 28 to September 3) from 328 to 360 in Durham, while the weekly incidence rate per 100,000 went from 44.7 to 49.1 and the per cent positivity rate climbed to 9.8 per cent from 9.4. Hospitalizations are up too, with 48 COVID-positive patients in Durham Region hospitals (up from 41), with two in ICU.
There was one new death in the region – there were two the week prior – and 19 outbreaks at local institutions like long term care homes, retirement residences and hospitals (from 20 the previous week), with three outbreaks in local hospitals.
The death toll in Durham Region since the pandemic was first declared now stands at 506.
