Halton remains in the middle of the Omicron wave of COVID-19 as more than 1,500 cases were reported over the weekend in Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Halton Hills

As the province has drastically reduced reporting, however, that number is almost assuredly much higher.

Outbreaks, which are simply defined as an infection of COVID-19 being passed from one person to another, remain high, with 44 ongoing at congregate living centres or institutions in the region.

By far the largest ongoing outbreak is at Maplehurst Correctional Facility in Milton with 122 confirmed cases.

There are 23 outbreaks at retirement and long-term care homes and hospitals with 379 active cases.

Acute care and ICU bed availability has improved marginally, with now 99 per cent capacity of acute care beds and 85 per cent ICU bed capacity.

Halton Public Health reminds residents that the best defence against a severe case of COVID-19 is to be fully vaccinated and boostered, wear masks when you’re out and respect social distancing guidelines.
