A COVID-19 outbreak at a major youth basketball tournament in Oshawa has health officials urging all attendees to get tested for the virus.

Durham Region’s Health Department is urging anyone who attended the 43rd Annual Jane and Finch Classic basketball tournament, held at the Playground Global facility, 1313 Boundary Road, Oshawa, from Aug. 3 to 8, to get tested as soon as possible.

The Health Department has been notified of multiple cases of COVID-19 associated with this event – at least 20 is currently known – and is having difficulty reaching all players and spectators. The teams and attendees are from all over Ontario and other provinces.

There were as many as 7,000 people who attended this event over the five days and cases have been identified from Quebec, Peel, Toronto, and Durham.

“We are reaching out through the media to help us make contact with anyone who may have attended this event,” said Dr. Robert Kyle, Durham Region Medical Officer of Health. “It is very important that individuals who participated in this basketball tournament get tested as soon as possible.”
