COVID-19: Hamilton reports two outbreaks, 32 new cases

Two new COVID-19 outbreaks have been declared in Hamilton, bringing the number of active outbreaks in the community to seven on Tuesday (Aug. 17).

Public Health Services data posted to the City of Hamilton website shows that there are 32 newly confirmed cases on Tuesday and no new deaths associated with the virus.

The number of active cases in the community at the moment is up to 318 from 308 on Monday.

Five of Hamilton’s seven outbreaks are in shelters or supportive housing facilities.

To date, there have been 22,179 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Hamilton since the first case was first reported here in March 2020.

The seven-day average for new cases is up to 45 from 43 at Monday’s reporting. Hamilton’s reproductive number remains above 1 at 1.51.

The number of people with COVID-19 being treated in Hamilton hospitals is 31, with 13 in ICU.

Meanwhile, Ontario is reporting 348 new COVID-19 cases and 10 deaths from the virus on Tuesday, though six of the deaths occurred months ago. A majority of the new infections were among unvaccinated or partially vaccinated people.

This is the first time since last week that the provincial daily case count has gone below 500.

There were 127 people in intensive care with COVID-related critical illness and 78 of those patients were on ventilators.

The head of the Ontario Hospital Association warned Tuesday that the Delta virus variant is sending more patients into intensive care, with 10 adults admitted on Monday.

According to Health Minister Christine Elliot, 20,254,502 vaccine doses have been administered in the province and 81.6 per cent of Ontarians 12 years of age and older have one dose and 73.7 per cent have two doses.

Locally, 760,559 vaccine doses have been administered and 77.8 per cent of residents twelve years of age and older have been given one dose and 69.6 per cent have been fully vaccinated.
