Durham residents may have to wait an extra day for their garbage to be picked up as high COVID-19 cases lead to a sanitation worker shortage.

The Region announced January 21 that Blue Box recycling and Green Bin wet garbage might not be picked up until a day after a resident’s usually scheduled day.

They’ve also extended pickup hours into the evening, and ask residents to keep the trash on the curb until it has been collected.

“We recognize the inconvenience and appreciate the understanding of residents as we work through these challenging times,” the Region said in their statement.

Residents are advised not to place their garbage on snowbanks, but on a cleared section of their driveway. Durham recommends placing the trash around 3 meters back from the street so it won’t be buried by passing snowplows.

Residents can monitor service updates through the Region’s Waste App for live information.
