COVID-19 cases nearly triple in Durham – Oshawa and Whitby the outbreak epicentre

One bad day does not a sixth wave make but the fact new COVID-19 cases nearly tripled on Tuesday from the day before is most definitely a cause for concern.
The epicentre of the outbreak was in the epicentre of Durham Region: Oshawa and Whitby. Oshawa reported 60 new cases compared to just nine the previous day and Whitby clocked in with 54 – up from 13 Monday. Clarington (22) and Pickering (21) also reported high numbers while the northern communities of Uxbridge, Scugog and Brock reported just three between them.
The active case count also took a big jump to 555 from 454.
The good news is there were no deaths reported and while the number of outbreaks in long-term care homes, retirement residences and hospitals climbed to five there were only two Durham Region residents who tested positive.
Hospital patients with the virus numbered 20 with two in intensive care.
The absentee rates in schools and day cares were also released today, with 6.5 per cent of children in day care absent for the week of March 20-26, with 3.1 per cent and 2.8 per cent rates for elementary and secondary schools, respectively.
