Courtice retirement home manager charged with unlawful confinement by Durham Police

A retirement resident manager in Courtice who police allege “removed door handles” in some units has been charged by Durham Police.
Investigators from DRP’s East Division began an investigation in mid-February after a complaint came forward against staff members at the White Cliffe Terrace Retirement Residence on Highway 2 in Courtice.
It was alleged that during the COVID-19 pandemic, staff members had removed door handles to some units in the residence. A whistleblower at the Courtice retirement home told police in February that management removed the door handles on rooms of COVID-19 positive residents, “trapping” them in their suites for days, in an attempt to control the spread of the virus.
The DRPS Criminal Investigations Bureau worked with community partners and oversight bodies and have arrested and charged a 40 year-old man who was the general manager at the time of the incident.
Tawab Karimi, of Oshawa, who has been on administrative leave since February, is charged with two counts of Unlawful Confinement. He was released on an Undertaking.
