Lakeridge Health staff are getting excited about the Coughlan Health & Wellness Centre in north Pickering as the fall opening of the state-of-the-art surgical centre and health-care facility draws closer.

“We’re excited about the progress,” said Dr. Randy Wax, Chief of Staff, Lakeridge Health. “The new Jerry Coughlan Health & Wellness Centre will not only enable care closer to home, but also help to ease surgical backlogs with procedures performed in a community facility.”

Once operational, the health care facility will provide a wide range of day surgeries, including endoscopy, minor orthopaedics, and gynaecological procedures. And with more than 9,000 surgical cases projected to be completed annually at the centre, hospital operating rooms will have increased capacity for more complex procedures.

“With this new community-based surgical centre, increased access and timeliness to surgical procedures will provide a better quality of life for the people of Durham Region,” added Wax.

The facility is expected to house other health-care services as well, including doctors’ offices, urgent care, diagnostic imaging, lab services and a pharmacy.

With the exterior of the Jerry Coughlan Health & Wellness Centre complete, construction is now focused on the interior spaces. This includes installing the fire protection systems, assembling internal partitions throughout the space, sourcing surgical equipment and work on the mechanical, electrical, and medical gas systems.

“In order to best meet the growing needs of our ever-increasing Durham Region community, we continue to reimagine how we deliver care outside the hospital walls and are exploring innovative models of care, including providing surgical care,” said Lakeridge Health CEO Cynthia Davis “Guided by our vision, One System Best Health, we are pursuing a robust strategy of health system integration, connecting the dots between hospital, community care, and long-term care. The (new health care centre) will play a pivotal role in expanding health care for the people in this region. It will provide connected and convenient care, including capacity to improve patient wait times and patient experiences, as well as be fully integrated within our health system.”

The modern multi-storey building is located at 2580 Brock Road on a 2.3-acre property that is currently owned by Lakeridge Health. With north Pickering’s population expected to grow by about 60,000 people over the next decade the new facility will support more convenient access to healthcare for people living in the community.

The health care centre was named after late local philanthropist, and community-builder Jerry Coughlan in recognition of his support of $9 million to the new facility through the Ajax Pickering Hospital Foundation and Lakeridge Health Foundation. These gifts provided the basis of the capital development of the centre.
