As we head into 2026, Costco is working towards opening new Ontario locations.
The one that is likely to arrive the soonest is on the border of Oakville and Burlington.
Earlier this month, demolition crews began tearing down existing stores to make way for the construction of a Costco on Wyecroft Road, near Burloak Drive and the QEW. The store will replace an existing plaza.
The much-planned and eagerly anticipated opening of the retail giant is expected to take place in 2027, well beyond original estimates.
Reports indicate the initial plan to convert existing stores into Costco was scrapped in favour of building a new structure.
Plans call for the site to have 15,662.6 square meters of floor shopping area, with access off Wyecroft Road and RioCan Boulevard that will lead into a parking area.
The new store will include all the usual food, clothing, television and computer departments that Costco is well known for.
It will also feature more than 1,000 parking spaces on the surface, with some spots located underground. Sixteen spaces on the surface area will be parking for the disabled with another six underground. Cyclists will also be able to leave their bikes in one of the 16 spaces that will be made available.
A Costco gas bar is slated for the site at the northwest corner near the South Service Road West and RioCan Boulevard intersection as part of the project.
As policy, Costco does not discuss future locations until their imminent openings, but there is enough official information to show that a second new location — this time along the border of Caledon and Brampton — is being seriously considered.
Developers want to make the giant wholesale warehouse the anchor store in a plaza to be located at the northwest corner of Mayfield Road and Creditview Road in Caledon, slightly north of the Brampton border.
Glen Schnarr and Associates Inc. has resubmitted a site plan approval application to the Town of Caledon on behalf of the land owner, 12100 Creditview Developments Limited.
The plans were resubmitted to Caledon to address some issues that town planners had with the original site plan application.
If the project comes to fruition, this Costco location will serve several communities, especially Brampton, Ontario’s third-largest city. Shoppers in Halton Hills, Orangeville and all neighbourhoods within Caledon will also have easy access to the warehouse.
Initial documents show the plaza would be home to a Costco, a Costco gas station, FreshCo, McDonald’s, Shoppers Drugmart, several other retail buildings, and a large parking lot.
The current proposal is the second attempt to bring Costco to the area.
In 2022, plans for the currently vacant site were proposed for a development that included a Costco, but that was rejected by local politicians over concerns that the area’s infrastructure would be unable to handle the size of the project.
However, sentiments have changed as the population boom in the area continues, prompting the widening of nearby roads and the desire to satisfy residents who want to shop without having to travel great distances.
Rumours of Costco coming to Caledon have circulated for almost a year, with most online observers welcoming the news.
“I think this is a perfect spot,” one commenter said on Reddit. “This is a growing area, and the drive to any other Costco is a long one. You can guarantee the place will always be busy.”
Those familiar with the development stressed that the project is still far from a certainty, that several approvals from the municipality have to be achieved, and that Costco ownership has to remain on board with the plan.
Still, a source told INsauga.com that many want to “make it happen” and that experienced people are working towards completing the project with Costco involved.
No timeframe has been set for the development, but earlier estimates indicate a late 2027 or early 2028 opening date as a realistic goal for shoppers to be inside the new Costco.
