An arrest warrant has been issued for a man following a string of door-to-door driveway repair scams in Mississauga, Brampton and other GTA cities.

Between June and August of this year, various homeowners say they retained the services of a man who falsely identified himself as belonging to a legitimate driveway repair company, defrauding them out of thousands of dollars.

The suspect has been identified as 20 year old Tom Delaney, wanted on fraud charges.

“It is alleged that Delaney and associates would create a sense of urgency and ask victims to pay in advance for his services,” said police.

In some instances the work would be started but not completed, while in other instances no work was done at all and communication ceased with the victims.

Investigators believe there may be more victims, and are urging anyone with information to contact investigators at 905-453-2121, extension 3335.

Home renovation scams have seen an uptick recently, with police recently arresting a Mississauga man for a series of alleged home contractor scams across the GTA that totaled more than $1 million.

Residents are advised to beware this type of scam with the following tips:

  • Be cautious of unsolicited offers via the phone, or door to door.
  • Don’t be pressured to make a quick decision and obtain more than one estimate.
  • Get recommendations from people you trust and check multiple references.
  • Do your research and check online reviews (for example, BBB.org)
  • Ensure the contractor is insured and ask about their warranty.
  • Draft a written contract clearly outlining the work that is requested and agreed upon.
  • Establish a timeline with expected start dates, benchmarks, and anticipated finish dates.
  • Establish an exact cost of the project.
  • Request a receipt if one is not offered.
