It looks like a controversial Toronto city councillor who was eyeing the provincial seat under Doug Ford’s PCs in Brampton is no longer seeking a political title in Brampton.
It looks like a controversial Toronto city councillor who was eyeing the provincial seat under Doug Ford’s PCs in Brampton is no longer seeking a political title in Brampton.
A few weeks ago, Toronto City Councillor for Ward 7, York West, Giorgio Mammoliti announced that he was seeking the provincial Conservative MPP nomination in the Brampton Centre riding.
On April 2, 2018, Mammoliti officially announced that this is no longer the case:
Since announcing that I would be seeking a seat in the provincial legislature,
I have received countless messages of support and encouragement.— Giorgio Mammoliti (@mammolitiward7) April 2, 2018
After making that announcement, my current constituents have been reaching out to me. Although they like the idea that I could help more people at the provincial level, they believe that my work, in my current community, is not yet complete.

I have taken my constituents’ thoughts to heart and due to the large volume of these kinds of messages, I have made the difficult decision to continue to represent the City of Toronto and continue to pursue my run as Cllr for Ward 7- York West in the upcoming municipal election.

This decision has been one of the most difficult of my career. I want to thank the residents and volunteers of Brampton Centre for their incredible support.

According to Mammoliti, his constituents want him to stay in York West, and he’s listening.
“I have taken my constituents’ thoughts to heart and due to the large volume of these kinds of messages, I have made the difficult decision to continue to represent the City of Toronto and continue to pursue my run as Cllr for Ward 7- York West in the upcoming municipal election,” tweeted Mammoliti.
The often controversial councillor tweeted that this decision was one of the most difficult of his career.
Mammoliti was first elected as an MPP for the NDP in 1990. He went into Toronto municipal politics serving as councillor for York West, and briefly ran for mayor in 2010 before dropping out.
Mammoliti initially said that since a number of his constituents moved from North York to Brampton, he might as well join them. He also said that he bought a house in Brampton back in 1983, and several people from his ward have moved to Brampton to buy homes, too.
Why is Mammoliti so controversial? Long story short, he has had a colourful history throughout his political career. You can read more about him here.
For now, the Brampton Centre nomination is sought by real estate broker Harjit Jaswal, and party activists Sudeep Verma and Nick Gahunia.
