Conservative Carrie outlasts NDP rival to win Oshawa Riding for seventh time

Oshawa Riding MP Colin Carrie has 17 years in the chair in Ottawa and last night’s federal election results means he get to get comfortable in the seat a little bit longer after fending off a strong challenge from NDP candidate Shailene Panylo to win by more than 5,000 votes.
Panylo, a community organizer and social activist taking her second crack at a seat in Ottawa, ran a strong campaign but 17 years experience in the job still resonates with voters, not to mention the usual vote-splitting that happens in Oshawa.
Liberal candidate Afroza Hossain, who had a couple of notable hiccups during her campaign, pulled in more than 12,000 votes.
With 140 of 141 polls reporting, Carrie totalled 20,843 votes, with Panylo at 15,177 and Hossain earning 12,093 votes. People’s Party candidate Darryl Mackie took 3,833 votes and the Green Party’s Sonny Mir recorded 1,082.
