Brampton’s lone Conservative Member of Parliament says he has been asked to cross the floor and join Mark Carney’s Liberal government.

Amarjeet Gill, MP for Brampton West, said he has rejected the political advances and remains committed to the federal Tories.

“Over the past few weeks, I have been approached by the Liberals and encouraged to cross the floor. I have firmly rejected their offer,” said Gill in a statement released through social media channels.

In recent months, the Conservatives have seen the defection of two MPs to the Liberals.

In November, Chris d’Entremont, MP for Acadie-Annapolis in Nova Scotia, switched parties. In December, Michael Ma, MP for Markham-Unionville, defected to the Liberals.

With 171 seats currently in the House of Commons, if Gill or any other opposition member were to jump, it would give the Liberals a majority in the House of Commons and the ability to stave off any threats of toppling Carney’s government.

Gill said he will continue to honour his commitment to the voters who elected him as a Conservative in the Brampton riding.

“I was elected to be their strong voice in Ottawa, and I remain fully committed to representing their values and priorities,” he said.

He went on to say that he stands with Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, who he believes will become the next Prime Minister of Canada.

Gill went on to say that as a Conservative, his priorities are to fight for safer streets and neighbourhoods, jobs, affordable housing, secure borders, and stronger pay in a sovereign Canada.
