A community centre in Mississauga’s south end that’s been closed for more than two years while some $40 million in renovations were completed has reopened to the public.

The 52-year-old Carmen Corbasson Community Centre partially reopened on Monday after the major overhaul, which began shortly after the popular recreation facility was shut down in September 2022. Work on the community centre, located on Cawthra Road south of the QEW, was initially scheduled to be completed last fall, but the project was delayed until spring 2025.

“Limited amenities and programming will be offered at this time while the final touches are made on this newly renovated facility,” City of Mississauga officials said.

The gymnasium, walking track, fitness studio and multi-purpose rooms have now reopened for public use.

The key component of the revamped facility will be a new state-of-the-art aquatics centre that will feature a 25-metre, six-lane pool. That hasn’t yet been fully completed and will open to the public at a later, unspecified date, the city said earlier.

Similarly, a new weight room will also open to users at some point in the near future.

With the facility now open again, residents and others may also start signing up either in person or online for programs and camps offered at the new-look community centre. Registration for city residents opened Monday morning at 7 a.m. with non-residents allowed to sign up starting next Monday. Visit activemississauga.ca to view available programs and camps.

“The redevelopment at Carmen Corbasson Community Centre will see enhanced recreational services for the community and bring greater accessibility and green building standards,” city officials said in an earlier project update.

The hockey arena also received significant upgrades in addition to other areas of the community centre as part of the major facelift.

Ward 1 Coun. Stephen Dasko, who represents that part of the city, said earlier the upgrades were needed to address population growth and changing demographics in the area. While the facility underwent an extensive renovation about 22 years ago, more work needed to be done.

The Cawthra Road Community Centre, which was built in 1972, was renamed to commemorate the service of former Mississauga city councillor Carmen Corbasson, who died in 2012.

The community centre is one of several across the city undergoing major renovations to combat shortcomings brought about by age.

The city says the $40-million Carmen Corbasson Community Centre redevelopment project “includes the renovation of existing infrastructure to address population growth and changing demographics in the area. It will also include the construction of a new addition that will feature an aquatics and fitness centre. The addition will be connected to the southeast side of the existing building, which will provide the indoor aquatics centre with spectacular views of the neighbouring woodlot.”

Dasko said earlier the community centre “has been a staple in the Ward 1 community for more than 40 years” and that it’s “exciting to see the vision for this beloved facility become a reality … This eagerly-anticipated project will enhance the quality of life for local residents by allowing the opportunity for more programming and improved access and safety, while raising the bar on sustainability and green building standards.”

An official grand reopening date has yet to be set.

Once fully completed, the renovated facility will include:

  • a fitness centre with cardio machines, weights and fitness studio with wood sprung floor
  • a new aquatics centre with a 25-metre, six-lane pool and a warm water therapy pool
  • a new multi-purpose space
  • enhancements to existing multi-purpose spaces
  • renovations to the indoor arena
  • improved connections to the Mississauga Seniors’ Centre
  • improved sustainable and accessible design standards
  • improvements to the hockey arena
