Commercial flights could be coming to another airport in Ontario

An airport in southern Ontario is a step closer to being able to accept commercial service.

The provincial government this week announced that it has invested almost $10 million to help turn Niagara District Airport “into a modern regional gateway capable of supporting future commercial passenger service.”

“Niagara is a major contributor to Ontario’s economy, and our government is investing in transportation infrastructure that will allow one of the most renowned tourist destinations on the planet to continue to thrive for generations to come,” said Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria.

“Our nearly $10-million investment in Niagara’s airport will support improved passenger air services, helping to make it faster and easier for millions of tourists to visit Niagara each year.”

The investment will help to advance the Niagara District Airport’s master plan.

That plan is a 20-year vision to turn the airport into a regional gateway.

It includes terminal upgrades, new service buildings, as well as taxiway, apron, and runway changes needed to support future growth.

“The province’s support marks a critical step in advancing our master plan and realizing our vision of becoming a modern regional gateway,” said Daniel Pilon, the CEO of Niagara District Airport.

“This funding brings us one step closer to introducing scheduled commercial service to Niagara, serving more than half a million residents and 13 million annual visitors.”

When exactly the airport may begin to have commercial passenger flights is still unclear, however.

Pilon told INsauga.com there are numerous steps that need to be completed and they are currently in the planning and design stage.

“This is the beginning of the process for something that’s a large build, and so we’re very excited about that part,” he said.

Pilon said their master plan has received a lot of support.

“So now we have to continue to go on the design and planning phase, which involves a lot of communication, a lot more community engagement, making sure people are aware… So that’s going to continue, but this is very positive next step as we move forward.”

The Niagara District Airport is owned by the City of Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, and Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake.
