Cobourg man faces 42 charges in series of smash-and-grab robberies across Durham Region

A man from Cobourg is up on more than 40 charges so far  after a string of smash-and-grab robberies across Cobourg, Durham and York Regions.

A victim tracked down their stolen laptop to a home in Cobourg. On August 11, the victim informed the Cobourg Police Service who then launched an investigation.

Officer went out the the house and found the laptop inside a car on the property. After getting a search warrant, police raided the car and found not only the laptop, but $38,000 in stolen goods.

Police found 13 laptops and tablets, numerous government-issued identification cards, cheques, and banking and tax documents that did not belong to the car owner.

Cobourg cops reached out their colleagues in Durham and York Regions. During a collaborative investigation they discovered the good had been stolen from cars at various golf courses in  “Smash-and-Grab” thefts and stolen from mailboxes across the jurisdictions.

Roderick Newman, 30 of Cobourg, is charged with 42 offences including;

  • 19 counts of possession of stolen property under $5,ooo,
  • 11 counts of possession of property stolen from the mail
  • three counts of possession of a forged document,
  • two counts of possession of property over $5,000, and
  • possession of a schedule one drug

Newman remained in custody until a bail hearing on August 23. Durham Regional Police and York Regional Police have yet to file charges, but are expected to soon.
