A popular seafood restaurant that doubles as a fish market and has been operating in Toronto for over a decade has announced that it will sadly be closing its doors.
Honest Weight has been serving lunch, dinner, and brunch with an emphasis on the freshest seafood for years, and now the restaurant’s reign is ending.
The lunch counter and fish shop also did wholesale, and became known over the years for its beautiful presentation of classic and inventive fish dishes such as oysters, chowder, crab cakes and okonomiyaki. The restaurant was co-owned by John Bil, who tragically passed away in 2018 at the age of 49.
“Hello Friends! After an improbable 11-year run, it’s time to say goodbye,” reads a post on social media from Honest Weight. “What a joy it has been to serve you! I am so grateful for a team that over the years made Honest Weight the special place that it is.”

The post goes on to shout out everyone who has contributed to Honest Weight’s journey over the years, specifically tagging each person on Instagram so they can get their well-deserved recognition.
Within under 24 hours, the post accumulated well over 1,000 likes and over 200 comments on Instagram, with many contributions from other local businesses.
“You are such an important piece of Toronto. God speed,” wrote top butcher shop Sanagan’s Meat Locker.
“One of our absolute favourites! You will be missed. The girls will be sad but filled with only the best memories. Thank you,” commented popular pizza place Maker Pizza.
“Great restaurant- thanks for the delicious meals and good times. Will be missed,” wrote DJ Skratch Bastid.
“Thank you for the lovely meals and last minute fish, you brought something special to the neighbourhood,” Alchemy Pickle Company commented.
“Gutted,” wrote local boutique Imelda. “One of my absolute favourite restaurants, ever! Thank you for such delicious meals and the friendliest crew. Not sure how I will live without the fish sandwich.”
“Thank you for all the amazing experiences and memories. The first place I took my baby granddaughter and at age 9 months was lapping up your chowder! I wish I was in town to say goodbye but you are my heart. Good luck in what is next,” food writer Joanna Sable commented.
The last service for Honest Weight, located in Toronto’s Junction neighbourhood, will be on May 30.
