CLOSURE: 'Least forgiving,' says Toronto bar about city operations as it closes

A beloved bar is making a final last call in a trendy Toronto neighbourhood.

The Electric Bill Bar, which has been calling a corner spot in Toronto’s Bloorcourt neighbourhood home for the last couple of years, recently posted on Instagram, stating that it would be closing its doors this summer due to intense operational concerns.

This community nook made its reputation as an Australian-themed bar,  its namesake a play on words inspired by the country’s native, and famously duck-billed, platypus.

As a result, drinks take on a more relaxed surfer vibe, with selections like the ‘Big Pineapple,’ with tequila, mezcal, Fermented Pineapple, and lime; the ‘Big Bogan,’ with whiskey, plum brandy, white miso, and jasmine; and the ‘Giant Koala,’ with Altos Blanco tequila, eucalyptus and soda.

In terms of food, The Electric Bill kept it simple and breezy, with selections like Louisiana-style corndogs, barbecue skewers, and spiced wings, all courtesy of the Slow Jams kitchen team.

However, the party that started a few years ago on Bloor seems to have met an abrupt end, with ownership announcing that the location would be closing at the end of the summer.

“The hospitality industry is one of the greatest industries that anyone can be a part of, but it is also one of the least forgiving,” said the owner in the post.

This sentiment is being felt across the board in the GTA, as numerous bars and restaurants, some old and some new, have been seeing abrupt closures across the board, as operational costs stay high and patron wallets remain light.

However, in keeping with the enduring spirit of Toronto hospitality, owners at the Electric Bill are taking it upon themselves to throw one last party, stating, “We’d love to see you in one more time for a whiskey-apple, or two, have a few of yarns nd then we’ll shut her all down.”

The Electric Bill Bar will have its last service on Aug. 16, 2026.
