A store that has been part of Square One in Mississauga since the shopping centre first opened its doors in 1973 has officially closed down for good.

Maison Birks, a well-known Canadian jewellery store founded in 1879, has papered its windows and posted a sign directing visitors to shop on its website or at its nearby Sherway Gardens location.

“We thank you for shopping with Maison Birks. Even though we have closed our doors we invite you to shop with us anytime at maisonbirks.com or visit us at our Sherway Gardens location,” the sign reads.

Maison Birks is known for selling a variety of fine jewellery (think earrings, necklaces, bracelets and rings) featuring diamonds and other precious stones.

The brand also sells a range of watches, including Rolex and Cartier pieces.

The closure marks the end of an era, as the jewellery store was one of Square One’s first tenants, alongside Hudson’s Bay, Coles, Fairweather, Peoples Jewellers and others.

It’s also far from the first original tenant to close, as other long-running brands such as Sears and Laura Second have also exited the shopping centre in recent years (with Sears pulling out of Canada entirely).
