CLOSURE: One of the best Mexican restaurants closes in Mississauga

A popular Mexican restaurant in Mississauga’s Streetsville neighbourhood has quietly closed after more than a decade in business.

Border MX, located at 277 Queen St. S., is now listed as permanently closed on Google.

According to the company’s website, the restaurant first opened its doors in 2014 with a vision of bringing authentic Mexican cuisine and culture to Canadian diners.

Over the years, Border MX became a popular local spot known for its open-air patio, live music nights and a wide variety of traditional and modern Mexican dishes.

The menu featured items such as birria tacos, wet burritos, enchiladas, chimichangas, fajitas, tortilla soup and churros, along with specialty dishes including Evil Shrimp, Volcan for Two and Taco Norteño. The restaurant also offered vegan, vegetarian, halal and gluten-free options.

The closure comes after a difficult stretch for the business over the past year. Following Valentine’s Day in 2025, owner Jorge Ortega previously told INsauga.com that a pipe burst overnight inside the restaurant, causing major water damage throughout the kitchen.

“It damaged everything — the deep fryer was full of water, the cooler broke…,” Ortega said at the time. “It took me two months to fix everything.”

While the company has not officially announced the closure on social media, it appears to have been a quiet farewell. Border MX has also not actively posted online content since October 2025.

Some Reddit users had speculated about the restaurant’s status earlier this year after Google temporarily listed the business as closed for several weeks.

One user claimed the restaurant’s phone number appeared to be out of service, while another suggested it would be unlikely for the line to be disconnected if renovations were underway.

In addition to dine-in service, Border MX also offered catering for corporate events, celebrations and large groups.

It remains unclear whether the beloved restaurant plans to reopen in another location in the future.
