A Mexican restaurant that brings Mayan and Yucatan flavours to Toronto has announced it will soon be closing and faces an uncertain future.

Ko’ox Hana served up the usual familiar Mexican fare like tacos, but with a twist. Their signature tacos are the Chilaca, which comes with a cheese-stuffed pepper plus your choice of protein, and the Campechano, which comes with chicharron, chorizo, beef and cheese.

You may be aware that the restaurant serves a wide range of other tacos, as well as commonly available burritos, nachos, quesadillas, tortas and guacamole. But what you may not have been aware of is just how many other special items have been served at Ko’ox Hana.

The restaurant also serves Lima soup, a traditional Mayan soup made with chicken broth and lime juice, and garnished with tortilla chips, sliced avocado and onions.

Ko’ox Hana has also been serving something called Huevos Motulenos, which consists of two layers of deep fried crispy tortillas layered with refried beans, two fried eggs, chopped ham, green peas and warm tomato sauce all topped with feta cheese and plantain.

Sadly, specific regional specialties like this may no longer be available from Ko’ox Hana, as the restaurant is preparing to close its doors.

Ko’ox Hana took to social media to let people know that the restaurant would soon be vacating its current location.

“As we prepare to close this chapter, we want to express our deepest gratitude to everyone who has supported us throughout the years,” reads a post on social media from the restaurant.

“It has been an honour to share our culture, traditions and cuisine with this community, and to create a space where so many meaningful connections and memories were made.”

The post goes on to say that the future is uncertain for the business and there are no updates to share at this time.

A few very heartfelt comments on the closing announcement on Instagram show how passionate people are about the restaurant, with one commenter calling it “my favourite spot in Ontario.”

“What are we supposed to do now if we wanna eat Salbutes y Panuchos?” one person worried.

“I better get in for one last chilaca tacos,” another person chimed in.

Ko’ox Hana has been operating in the Kensington Market neighbourhood.

The last day for Ko’ox Hana in Toronto should be June 30.
