What many have dubbed Toronto’s definitive fried chicken sandwich shop is closing.
PG Clucks, which had its humble beginnings in a simple window on College St. a decade ago, has announced that it will be grilling up its last sandwich this summer.
In an official Instagram post, representatives stated, ever so bittersweetly, that they have made this call as they refuse to buckle to the high price standards the Toronto food scene is becoming synonymous with.
“The reality is that we can’t continue to offer our huge sandwiches at current prices, and we’re not interested in selling takeout chicken sandwiches for $15+,” read the post.
This maneuver of sticking to one’s guns — seldom seen in Toronto — has been met with nothing but praise, with one comment on the post reading, “This is actually making me emotional.”

The post stated that the flagship location on College has halted operations immediately, while their secondary location on Queen St. will keep the party going as long as they can, with their doors scheduled to close for good on July 25.
“We were Toronto’s very first dedicated fried chicken sandwich joint,” continued the post. “We introduced the city to Nashville Hot Chicken, and we’re humbled to have inspired a whole generation of chicken spots that followed.”
While this news is another blow to Toronto’s culinary landscape, those behind PG Clucks were quick to note that not all is lost, as they will be setting their sights on bigger things to fry than just chicken.
“We will be turning it into a new concept that aligns more with the current economic reality and where we are today as chefs.”
While no news is set in stone on when that location will open, if it’s as iconic as its predecessor, Toronto is in for a treat.
