CLOSURE: Dump truck crash that sparks fire shuts down part of southern Ontario highway

UPDATE: The driver of the passenger vehicle was promounced dead at the scene. The truck driver was not injurted.

A collision between a dump truck and passenger vehicle that resulted in a fire has fully closed a section of highway north of Oshawa on Friday morning, police say.

Ontario Provincial Police said the extent of any injuries is not yet known in the wake of the two-vehicle crash, which occurred at around 7 a.m. on Highway 7 in Scugog, some 25 kilometres from Oshawa and northeast of Toronto.

Highway 7 is fully closed in the area between Line 12 and Line 14, south of Saintfield, police said just before 7:30 a.m. Emergency crews were still responding to the collision at that time.

Police urge motorists to avoid the area.
