A popular Cuban restaurant that’s taken up residence on a busy street in Toronto for over a decade has announced the doors will soon be closing.

La Cubana has been in business for over 10 years in Toronto, but now their time at the location that started it all is coming to an end.

The restaurant has now posted an announcement on social media letting people know about the upcoming closure of La Cubana.

“We have a long history on the street. Our family first opened Delux at this location in 2007. This is certainly a sad day for us and difficult to fathom. After struggling through the pandemic, subsequent inflation, high food costs, tax, insurance and energy increases, many weather events, and other factors, it has simply become unsustainable. So many of us have enjoyed the incredible flavours that my sister, chef Corinna Mozo, created for La Cubana,” reads a message on social media signed by Pablo Mozo.

“We have delighted in all the anniversaries, engagements, first dates, kids’ birthday parties that so many of you have celebrated here. We are truly going to miss all of you and will remember those experiences fondly. We are mostly sad, however, for our staff. These are the most wonderful people. They have stuck with us through it all and I really want to say a heartfelt thank you for everything.”

The post accumulated nearly 1,000 likes in under 24 hours and over 100 comments on Instagram.

“OMG! Thank you for the love!!” the restaurant commented on its own post in response. “Also have to say our landlord has been so great for 20 years and has always treated us very fairly!”

That last part may have been addressing many comments wondering if the closure is due to any issues with the landlord.

“This is sad, I took someone there recently and had told them how La Cubana existed before Ossington even became such a popular street,” one person wrote in a comment on Instagram.

La Cubana also once operated a location on Roncesvalles that closed recently as well, which a commenter shouted out.

“Sad indeed,” the commenter wrote. “First Roncy and now the mothership!”

“Please come and say goodbye, support our staff, and let’s send La Cubana Ossington into the sunset with a month long fiesta!” reads the closing announcement on social media.

The last day of service for La Cubana on Ossington will be Sunday, June 28.
