A top Thai restaurant that’s something of a hidden gem in Toronto has been quietly letting people know that the doors will soon be closing.
Lao Thai has become well known and beloved for its Lao-style Thai food in Toronto, which has ranged from pad thai to fried chicken over the years.
The restaurant had previously been letting people know on social media that Lao Thai might close at its current address and reopen elsewhere.
Unfortunately for lovers of Lao Thai’s delicious Thai food, the restaurant has not confirmed that a new location will be opening, but has confirmed that it will soon be closing its doors.
Over the past weeks, Lao Thai has been posting to social media, counting down the last days in business for the restaurant, and people have been gradually taking notice.
The restaurant has been posting to Instagram with captions reading, “We will be closed in less than a month. Come get your fix before we are gone,” “Less than a month away and we will be closed,” and “Come get your Lao Thai on before we permanently close. Just over a month and we will be gone.”
A very recent post made it very clear that the restaurant would soon be closing for sure, stating that Lao Thai would be closing in about two weeks.
“15 more working days and we are gone,” reads a social media post from Lao Thai. “I hope to see you guys come enjoy Lao Thai before we are gone.”

That got people’s attention. Heartfelt comments on the post on Instagram are calling the news “sad” and “heartbreaking.”
“Will you be planning to move to another location eventually…? I remember this was mentioned once before!” one person commented hopefully. The restaurant did not reply in an Instagram comment.
“You’re my favorite place in the city,” someone else commented sadly. “Your soups fix us up whenever we feel sick or low. Please let us know if you move or open a new place. Hope the next chapter is a great one.”
“Love your souk gai so much,” another person wrote in a comment on Instagram. “Can I please have the recipe, will pay for it!!!”
“What!!! No!!!” someone commented on Instagram. “This city kills everything that makes it great! We love you guys!!!”
Lao Thai in Toronto should be closing within the first weeks of May.
