A pedestrian bridge in north Mississauga has been closed to the public due to flooding for the second time in the past two months, say city officials who are also warning residents to stay away from all watercourses as stormy weather persists.

The City of Mississauga said Thursday morning the flooded footbridge at Derry Greenway Park in Malton is temporarily closed “due to high creek levels” caused by overnight thunderstorms and heavy rain that have caused local creeks, rivers, ponds and lakes “to rise to unsafe levels with fast-moving water.”

The park is located on Derry Road East just west of Goreway Drive, and the pedestrian bridge will remain closed until further notice, the city said.

The same footbridge was shut down in April due to a storm that brought heavy rainfall.

In a public safety notice issued Thursday morning, Mississauga officials urged people to “avoid all watercourses and keep pets and children safe” as the rainy, stormy weather is expected to continue most of the day.

“Residents are reminded to stay away from creeks, rivers and stormwater areas as rain and gusty winds move through the city,” the online notice continued.

“The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority has issued a flood warning. Flooding is happening in parts of the TRCA watershed, but current impacts appear to be localized to Toronto.

“Mississauga is seeing small pockets of localized flooding at this time. More rain is expected over the next few hours and could lead to localized flooding in low-lying areas.”

Meanwhile, Credit Valley Conservation, the organization that protects natural areas and watercourses in Peel’s three municipalities and several other communities, issued a flood watch just after 9 a.m. on Thursday.

It, too, advises people in Mississauga, Brampton and elsewhere to keep their children and pets — and themselves — away from all water bodies.

“Additional heavy rainfall between five and 15 mm is expected and (the) risk of thunderstorms continues,” CVC said in its alert. “Soils are saturated and water levels continue to rise.”

Under a flood warning, such as the one issued by the TRCA, people are urged to “act immediately to protect yourself from danger and your home from flood damage,” the city said.

Officials added they’ll be monitoring weather conditions and Mississauga waterways throughout Thursday and into Friday, if necessary.

City crews will also monitor and maintain storm drains on city roads and respond to reports of water ponding or flooding.

Residents can report storm drain issues online at the City of Mississauga or by calling 311.
