Good news for Hamilton Mountain residents — a community favourite and long-running family fish and chips restaurant plans to reopen soon under new ownership.

In December, Harry’s Fish and Chips at 1138 Fennell Ave. E., Hamilton, announced it was closing after more than 40 years as a family-run business.

Harry’s was known for its thin and crispy battered fish and generous portions of chips.

“The fish batter is excellent. Thin but not too thin, flakey, and just the right amount of crunch,” wrote one person on Google Reviews. “Big piece of fish that melts in your mouth.”

“The best fish and chips in Hamilton. Period,” another wrote.

So, it was sad news when they announced their last day was Dec. 24, 2022.

“After 40 great years of serving the local community delicious fish and chips, we have decided to close our doors and try our hand at something new,” the owners wrote on Facebook on Dec. 6.

The owners thanked the customers and employees for their continued support over the years.

“For a restaurant to survive and thrive for 40 years is an accomplishment of which we can all be proud of. We could not have done it without all of you!”

But they also said they were searching for a new owner who understood the business and was “eager and capable of developing its future potential and continue the tradition of bringing people together and having a sense of being home away from home.”

And it appears they found the right fit for the restaurant.

On April 20, they announced new owners will take over the business in May.

“They have committed to provide the same great taste and quality food that has made Harry’s a local favourite for years,” Harry’s wrote on their website.

There is no firm re-opening date yet but it is expected to be sometime in mid-May.
