A St Catharine man has been charged after a clerk locked him inside the store while he was attempting to rob it.

On October 9 at 9:20 pm, Niagara Police were called to the gas station on Queenston Street near Page Street after a man entered the store and grabbed $47 worth of goods.

After approaching the cash register, he then told the clerk that he was armed. The clerk, in turn, took off outside the store but not before locking the would-be thief inside.

Realizing he was trapped, the suspect started trashing the store and eventually escaped.

However, police say his escape was slowed down enough that they were able to track his movements through a network of CCTV cameras in the area.

Police say they found him in the Geneva Street and Church Street area just 15 minutes later and busted him.

Kidus Dawit, 34, of St. Catharines has been charged with robbery.

He was held in custody for a video bail hearing on October 8 at the courthouse in St. Catharines and released from custody with a future court date.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 905-688-4111, option 3, extension 1024233.
