Clarington looking at 3.75 per cent tax hike as budget process begins

Clarington kicked off the 2023 budget process with a special council meeting Friday morning to review the proposed budget and presentations from outside agencies seeking municipal support.

On January 30 Council will begin their budget deliberations.

The Draft 2023 Budget Booklet has been released to the public, with the municipality looking at a 3.75 per cent increase to the tax levy, not counting any tax hikes imposed by the Region of Durham. The booklet, which is available on Clarington’s website at (www.clarington.net/budget) outlines the Municipality’s financial plan for 2023 to guide policy, decision-making and service levels.

The preliminary budget tax hike will allow for inflationary pressures and decrease Clarington’s reliance on the Tax Rate Stabilization Reserve Fund, according to Financial Services staff.

If needed, there may be an extra budget meeting on February 3. The Council meeting to pass the 2023 budget will be held on February 13 at 9:30 a.m. The budget ratification meeting will be continued, if necessary, on February 17.

These meetings are open to the public to view in person or online at [email protected] and residents are encouraged to engage in the process and offer their input.

Written submissions can be emailed to [email protected] or visit www.clarington.net/delegations for information on appearing before Council.
