A $1.25 million grant from Clarington Council was enough to bump up shovel sales in Newcastle as the Marigold Hospice Care prepares for ground-breaking later this fall.

“After years of work, this much-needed residential hospice is on the brink of being able to break ground, and we’re closing the gap,” said Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster. “I am proud to say that thanks to Council’s compassionate support, local health care will soon improve for our residents.”

For those at the end of life, the hospice will provide comfort, care, and compassion in a home-like setting and support for their families as well as addressing a “significant gap” in the local health care system.

The volunteer team has worked through the challenges of the pandemic and escalating construction costs to raise $8 million in donations for the Clarington hospice fundraising campaign. Clarington’s $1.25 million grant is the final push needed to build this project.

“We are so incredibly grateful for the ongoing support of Clarington Council. Since work first began on creating a hospice, members of Council have championed the cause. We are so excited to make this facility a reality, and we would not be able to without Clarington’s contributions,” said Marigold Hospice Care Board Chair Melodie Zarzeczny.

Clarington has long supported the new hospice, donating surplus land on Cobbledick Road in Newcastle for the building and a grant to offset development charges for the project, with January 29, 2023, declared Durham Region Hospice – Clarington Awareness Day.

Proceeds from this month’s 19th annual Clarington Golf Classic will also support the hospice.
