Just three months after writing an ahead-of-schedule cheque for $3.75 million to the Bowmanville Hospital Foundation, the municipality of Clarington has followed through on its historic $7.5 million commitment with a final $3.75 million contribution to the hospital’s redevelopment.
The investment completes the municipality’s pledge and marks another significant step toward transforming Bowmanville Hospital into a modern facility that will more than double in size to meet the needs of one of Ontario’s fastest-growing communities.
“Clarington is all in when it comes to the health and well-being of our residents,” said Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster. “We’ve been eagerly awaiting the hospital’s redevelopment, which will more than double its size. This matters because everyone in Clarington needs and deserves life-saving care close to home.”
The second cheque presentation took place Wednesday night during the Bowmanville Hospital Foundation’s Annual General Meeting.
As Durham Region continues to grow, the redevelopment will help meet increasing demand for care by expanding access to modern facilities and services for patients and families.
The Bowmanville Hospital Foundation welcomed the fulfilled commitment as a strong signal of momentum for the redevelopment and a powerful example of local partnership in action. Through the We Care, We Can campaign, the foundation continues to lead the fundraising effort for the community’s $110 million share of construction costs and 100 per cent of equipment needs for the redeveloped hospital.
“We are deeply grateful to the Municipality of Clarington for its extraordinary leadership and partnership,” said Maria Petri, Bowmanville Hospital Foundation’s CEO. “This investment sends a clear message that our community believes in the future of local health care and Bowmanville Hospital. It strengthens the momentum behind this once-in-a-generation project and inspires all of us to keep moving forward together.”
The rebuild of the hospital will transform care in Clarington and across Durham. Plans for the redeveloped hospital include expanded critical care services, an Ambulatory Care Centre, a Haemodialysis Centre, Level 3 Critical Care capacity, private and bariatric rooms, and a rooftop helipad to support rapid access to emergency services.
Community events raised more than $200,000 towards the redevelopment of Bowmanville Hospital last year, showcasing the community’s willingness to rally behind the once-in-a-generation rebuild of the health care facility.
“Seeing our community come together for this campaign has been truly inspiring,” said Petri. “The dedication and generosity of our community reveal the spirit that has sustained the foundation for 50 years. As we celebrate this milestone, we are excited to carry this momentum forward at a pivotal time in Bowmanville Hospital’s history.”
The We Care, We Can campaign – the largest fundraising initiative in the Bowmanville Hospital Foundation’s history – was launched in 2022 to invite local businesses, residents, and community groups to use their platforms and creativity to raise funds and awareness for the campaign. In 2025, the foundation was chosen as the beneficiary for 58 community fundraising events, helping to advance plans for life-saving equipment and move the hospital’s redevelopment forward.
The brand-new hospital will be built entirely on site, ensuring patient care remains uninterrupted throughout construction.
