The Municipality of Clarington is celebrating International Women’s Day with a campaign to honour the “exceptional” woman in the community.

At the heart of the campaign is Clarington Emergency and Fire Services, where eight female firefighters put their lives on the line for their neighbours every day.

“Believe in yourself. Firefighting is a male-dominated field, but you can change the standard,” read a statement from the eight firefighters. “Don’t be afraid to fail. Don’t be discouraged. We have all failed many times. It takes years of perseverance to do it. Keep going. Push yourself to take the extra step and reach out to the fire department. We mentor each other and push each other through.”

Clarington, which strives to forge an inclusive, equitable work culture where everyone has an opportunity to thrive, wants to amplify the contributions and successes of the women in its workforce through the campaign.
