The City of Hamilton has beefed up internet speeds in many of its facilities in an effort to improve connectivity for residents.

In a press release issued Thursday (March 10), the City said that over the past two years work has been done at 115 sites across Hamilton to install or upgrade broadband fibre connections that increase speeds from 100 Mbps to 1000 Mbps.

“The pandemic has clearly demonstrated that digital connectivity is essential and that those who are not connected are at a disadvantage,” said Cyrus Tehrani, Chief Digital Officer and Director of Innovation for the City of Hamilton.

“Expanding connectivity options via enhancing and advocating for digital infrastructure across the city is critical to help reduce the digital divide in our community.”

The infrastructure work cost $567,000 and saw facilities like community, recreation, seniors, libraries, arenas and more get the much-needed speed upgrades.

A complete list of the 76 City of Hamilton facilities that offer public Wi-Fi currently can be found on the City’s website. There is also an interactive map showing where public Wi-Fi access is available.

“Modern infrastructure availability is critical to our community and will be a key factor of our city’s health, growth and prosperity,” said Mayor Fred Eisenberger in a statement.

“Ensuring our digital infrastructure can support the growing demand will help Hamilton attract and grow local businesses and manage our busy lives, now and into the future.”
